On 27 May 2016 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) detained a bulker (which was not entered with Britannia) after an inspection found that the crew were unable to properly operate the ship’s navigation system. The inspection revealed that the crew could not fully operate the ECDIS, despite being fully certified. AMSA has now issued a marine notice reminding seafarers, shipowners and pilots about the importance of well-planned BRM techniques, efficient watch keeping arrangements and passage planning requirements all of which will enhance safety and reduce errors when navigating ships.
